A brilliant century by Shai Hope helped Windies win the third match of Azizi Bank ODI Cup by 5 wickets to secure a series whitewash against Afghanistan at Lucknow’s Ekana Cricket Stadium.
Having won the toss, Windies skipper Kieron Pollard opted to field first in the dead rubber match. Afghanistan posted 249/7 in the allotted 50 overs setting a target of 250 for the West Indies. Experienced pair of Asghar Afghan and Mohammad Nabi put on 127 runs for the sixth wicket to stabilize the innings to some extent for Afghanistan after the pair resumed with the team struggling at 118/5 in the 29th over.
Afghan top-scored with a terrific knock of 86 runs while Nabi remained unbeaten on 50. Earlier, opening batsman Hazrat Zazai and hard-hitting batsman Najibullah Zadran also contributed with 50 and 30 runs respectively.
In response, an unbeaten century from the in-form batsman Shai Hope powered West Indies to victory in the 49th over as the men in maroon clean swept the series 3-0 in a dominant display to extend Afghanistan’s losing streak in ODIs to 12 matches.
Hope top-scored with an unbeaten 108 while debutant Brendon King, Roston Chase and skipper Kieron Pollard scored 39, 42 and 32 runs respectively.
Roston Chase was awarded the player of the series award for his all-round performance in the three-match series.
The T20I Series between both teams will start from 14th November at the same venue.
