The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced the Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 schedule, which will be held in Zimbabwe from 4th – 25th March 2018.
The 10 teams competing for two vacant places in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 are split into two groups. Afghanistan is placed in Group B with host Zimbabwe, Scotland, Hong Kong and the runners-up of the ICC World Cricket League Division 2. Group A consists of former world champions West Indies, Ireland, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea (PNG) and winners of the ICC World Cricket League Division 2. The winners and runners-up of the ICC World Cricket League Division 2 will be decided in mid-February as the tournament is scheduled to take place from 8th – 15th February 2018 between host Namibia, Canada, Kenya, Nepal, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
A total of 34 matches between the 10 participating teams will be played in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018. In the first round, each team will play a game against the other four teams in their group and the top three from both group will qualify to the Super Six Stage where they will play three matches against the qualifying teams from the other group.
Afghanistan’s Captain, Asghar Stanikzai has been quoted in the ICC media release saying that: “We are hopeful that the boys will perform to their best in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018”.
