Lalchand Rajput become New Head Coach of Afghan Cricket

Kabul:  We have received several applications from all over the world, Lalchand Rajput and also Mohammad Kaif were shortlisted for the final round of interview.  However Rajpoot was selected by selection committee.

“Mr. Rajput, who has coached the Indian Under-19 Cricket side as well as the Mumbai Indians franchise in the IPL, 54-year-old’s experience is a key asset for Afghanistan Cricket,” said Nasimullah Danish Chairman of Afghanistan Cricket Board.

Mr. Rajput born in December 1961, Bombay, is a former Indian cricketer who played in two tests and four One Day International matches 1985 to 1987.

Rajput had a distinguished career as an opening batsman for Bombay, and at one time was considered one of the best openers in India after Sunil Gavaskar.

After his playing days, he served as the joint honorary secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association and also took up coaching, which included successful spells with the Under-19 team. He was appointed cricket manager before India's successful campaign at the ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa and held the position till the tour of Australia in 2007-08.

Mr. Rajput was assigned the task as a manager of Indian cricket team for a brief period. He has been actively involved in cricket administration over the past several years, including holding positions with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).

He attended a coaching clinic held at Bangalore in April 2007. He was coach of Under-19 Indian Cricket Team during the tour of England. Rajput was appointed as the manager of the winning Indian cricket team for the Twenty 20 World Championship 2007 held in South Africa. Rajput was the coach of the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League 2008.

Nasimullah Danish, Chairman of Afghanistan Cricket Board said, “Mr. Rajput is technically and professionally strong coach in cricket, i am sure his presence with Afghan national cricket team will benefit the team; he will be joining team in Scotland, Ireland and Netherland tour.”
